We were slightly late to this party but are fully on board now. We recently heard a very informative interview with Lizzo on NPR and we were hooked. Born in Detroit and having grown up in Houston, Lizzo, who recently signed to Atlantic Records, later moved to Minneapolis and was hooked on the versatile music environment. Although she felt that musicians in other places were constrained, she was immediately embraced by the Twin City vibe. So much so that she was included on Prince‘s 2014 LP, Plectrumelectrum, on the track “Boytrouble.”
With all of this background, we really didn’t know what to expect but could not stop listening to her new project, Big Grrl Small World. She is all at once witty and soulful. Her voice and cadence draws you in but her personality keeps you there. She emotes positivity and realness like Queen Latifah or MC Lyte and some of the comedic flare of a Nicki Minaj (without the over the top sexuality). To top it all off, she rides a funky and sometimes futuristic soundtrack effortlessly. We are really looking forward to more from this amazing artist. Be sure not to miss her on the soundtrack of the newest Barbershop movie, The Next Cut, with her newest track, Good As Hell.
