We are huge fans of both Ms. Patti Austin and Depeche Mode. I remember being off from school one day at watching General Hospital with my mother. Luke and Lara were running away from somebody and all I could remember was the emotional ‘Baby Come to Me‘ sung by Pattie Austin and James Ingram playing in the background. Once I heard that powerful voice I was hooked.
Fast forward a few years to a bus ride from Exeter, New Hampshire to Boston Commons and I get my first earful of Depeche Mode. I recall sitting in the back of the bus (by choice) and seeing this girl with a tape player in her own world. I asked “What are you listening to?” Without responding, she put the earphones on my head. “Blasphemous Rumors” from the Catching Up With Depeche Mode album played. I nodded and was instantly hooked. That day, I went to Strawberry’s record store on Washington Street in Boston and bought all of the other Depeche Mode LPs. Seeing them in NY a couple years back was simply perfect. I also remember seeing Patti Austin several years back when we both actually shared a bill at the National Black Filmmaker’s Awards in Oakland, California.
And now, we get this sexy remake from Patti. Who would have thunk it? Patti does a great job with Enjoy the Silence, one of our favorite Depeche Mode songs. The groove is minimal and her voice gently rides over it like an Olympic skater…classy and with precision. Bravo Patti!
