Join us this Sunday as the Soulhead.com crew heads up to Harlem for one of the best afternoons of music anywhere, Sundae Sermon.  The brainchild of DJ Stormin’ Norman, this series has featured some of the hottest DJ talent for true connoisseurs you will find anywhere.  So far this Summer, legendary producer “Little” Louie Vega, Qool DJ Marv and many others have stepped behind the turntables to keep it hotter than July.

And now, this weekend, DJ to the stars (and star in her own right), Beverly Bond, whose very positive Black Girls Rock campaign has been causing quite a lot of buzz, and incredible veteran groove merchants DJ Reborn and Kamala will certainly make it hard for anyone to sit in their seats.  Be ready for great music and an even better cause:  Girl Power Mentor Day!  These three ladies of some of the best DJs working today (and 3 of the finest too!) so you won’t be disappointed.  Bravo sistas!

Maze featuring Frankie Beverly at Wingate Field in Brooklyn TONIGHT, Monday, July 11 7:30pm FREE CONCERT

SOULHEAD ALERT! SOULHEAD ALERT! Tonight, it is going down in Brooklyn!  As part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. concert series, the legendary Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, will be gracing the Wingate Field stage tonight and we are sure the place will be packed so get there early.  We are.  For those that are not aware of how incredible a concert can be, you need to make your way down to this one.  Having seen Maze and Frankie many times before, we can attest to the fact that this man and this band cannot be touched.  With a string of hits ranging back to the 70′s, including ‘Joy & Pain’, ‘Happy Feelings‘ and ‘Golden Time of Day‘, this band has been nicknamed the Black Grateful Dead for their blend of improvisation, solid grooves and fiercely loyal fan base.  Fans in the South are fairly used to the regular shows that Frankie puts on as Maze tours tirelessly throughout the year.   In my hometown of Washington, D.C., Frankie is nearly on God-level status.   So it is really a treat for us way up North, to be able to be blessed with this show.   Again, this is a must see.

Meshell Ndegeocello at Weeksville in Brooklyn Saturday, July 9 with Muhsinah. 5p-8p FREE CONCERT

Another incredible show this July at the Garden Party in the historic Weeksville area in Brooklyn.   This weekend, Washington, D.C. native, Meshell Ndegeocello will bless Brooklyn with her deeply inspired brand of soul.   For those who don’t know, Meshell burst onto the scene in the early 90′s with her incredible debut, Plantation Lullabies, which featured the groovy song, Dreadlocks, among other classics.  Since then, she has received critical acclaim and has continued to build upon her significant legacy by working with some of music’s most celebrated musicians like the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Alanis Morrisette, James Blood Ulmer, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Tony Allen, John Medeski, Billy Preston and Chaka Khan, among others.  Based on rumors in the grapevine (mainly several blog posts this Spring like this one) that she may be doing several Prince covers.  This could be legendary folks!

Indie singer/songwriter/keyboardist Muhsinah’s sound includes gripping vocals, inspired wordplay and thoughtful composition. The classically trained, Washington D.C. native toured with Common last year and is featured on his track “Changes.” For her Weeksville set, Muhsinah will perform songs from her forthcoming album Gone, due out this summer.

FREE CONCERT – Pharoahe Monch with Baloji at Weeksville on July 2 in Brooklyn, NY UPDATED WITH VIDEO FOOTAGE

UPDATED WITH VIDEO

soulheads rejoice!  Much slept on and in many ways underrated MC Pharoahe Monch makes his way to the legendary Weeksville stage on Saturday, July 2, 2011.  For those who don’t know, Monch has been on the scene since the Golden era.  We recall meeting him back in the day when he was a part of the seminal hip-hop duo Organized Confusion.  Along with Prince Po(etry), they crafted some of the illest rhyme patterns and lyrics over beats that were fresh and not overly sampled at the time and were one of the first groups signed to now defunct and Disney owned Hollywood Basic hip hop imprint.  When we met then, Monch was walking to a gig at the now defunct Muse underground hip hop club.  He was very humble and a great guy as we had expected.  He treated me, then a college radio DJ, with much love and respect.

According to his website, Baloji, is a Congolese Belgian singer.  We did some research and really dig this number, which is sung in French. Nice groovy tune with an international flavor.

We are looking forward to seeing this and many other shows this Summer at Weeksville.  This popular series curated by fellow Soulhead and Rebel Soul Records owner, Shawn Peters, has featured a stellar lineup for years and this year seems to be no different.   Rebel Soul, as many know, is the home of to one of our favorite singers, Martin Luther.
