We loved this list so much, we had to share.

From buzzfeed.com:

The Roots drummer’s memoir Mo’ Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove is full of great stories, like when he completely embarrassed himself in front of Prince.

1. Questlove was a sputtering, nervous mess when he first met his idol, Prince. Read more of this post

Released: March 8, 1991
Genre: Drama, Action, Adventure
Running Time: 100 minutes

To celebrate Wesley Snipes being released from jail, we are bringing you this iconic movie, New Jack City, which was released more than 20 years ago. Since then, many of its co-stars, including Chris Rock and Ice-T, have gone on to major success. And while the story was compelling, it was the music of this film that propelled it to the top. The soundtrack went to the top of Billboard’s Rap/Hip Hop chart in 1991 and hit number 2 on the Top 200 chart.   Read more of this post

Hiatus Kaiyote at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City on March 22, 2013 [EVENT RECAP]

On Friday, March 22, 2013, Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote made their NYC debut at West Village venue Le Poisson Rouge. The band has generated a great deal of buzz and amassed a substantial fan base thanks to efforts like their debut EP Tawk Tomahawk.

Hiatus Kaiyote categorizes their music as “future soul,” which is appropriate given its neo-soul, jazz, hip-hop, and electronic influences. The band itself certainly has an eclectic look, with lead singer/songwriter Nai Palm appearing as if she stepped right out of the pages of a Japanese manga. The other band members – keyboardist Simon Mavin, drummer Perrin Moss and bassist Paul Bender – are a bit more conservative in their personal stylishness. Read more of this post

Trinidad James Ft. T.I. Young Jeezy & 2 Chainz “All Gold Everything” Remix Official Video + FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD

Trinidad James

Ok, so after being lambasted for his teeth, music and clothing choices on Hot97 by Peter Rosenberg and being dissed by fellow (jealous) rappers, it now appears the hip-hop community is beginning to embrace Trinidad James.  The rapper, who came out of nowhere last year with his ode to swagnifigance, “All Gold Everything”, received as much praise as condemnation.  For the most part, the beef from fellow rappers goes a little something like this: “how could this crazy lookin dude from down South blow the F up after only rapping for 10 months and we been grindin writin maad lyrics and we still work at UPS.” Haters, get over it!  Every rapper is not going to be Rakim and every song does not have to be complex to be entertaining. TheeSatisfaction – Loves Erykah Badu EP REVIEW + FULL STREAM + MP3 DOWNLOAD

TheeSatisfaction

Artist: TheeSatisfaction
Title: Loves Erykah Badu
Released: January 28, 2013
Hood: Seattle, Washington USA
Label: SubPop
Genre(s): R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, Psychedelica

We got hip to these Seattle ladies last year when we strolled into Other Music, one of the best of the remaining record stores in Manhattan.  After snooping around a bit, our guy asked if we had heard this group, TheeSatisfaction (Catherine Harris-White & Stasia Irons).   We hadn’t but took a chance.  That album, awE NaturalE, was released on SubPop records shortly before I walked into the shop. Luckily, a speaking engagement at Stanford took us out to the West Coast, where we needed to be to hear this record for the first time. Full of very abstract beats, rhymes and grooves, their song needed to be heard where it could breath. Thus, on highway 280, we slid the CD in and just listened. Although every song was not a banger, per se, we could see where this duo was going and decided to keep them on our radar. Read more of this post

For the Records: The Final days of Bleecker Bob’s Record Store FULL DOCUMENTARY

We were too saddened to learn of the pending closing of Bleecker Bob‘s record shop in New York City’s Greenwich Village neighborhood. Apparently, the rent is too damned high, according to blogs and reports from the owners. CapitalNewYork.com recently created a documentary which outlines the story behind Bleecker Bob and its untimely demise. Members of soulhead staff certainly will miss those bin digging pilgrimages to Bobs and how many times we found something we had been looking for for years. For those of us living in modern day NYC, we count this loss amongst many others in recent years. The City is still great but some of those institutions that have made it second to none are vanishing. So, if you have not taken a trip to Bleecker Bob’s, please do so before it is too late.

Here is an overview of the documentary:

Capital is proud to present the documentary film, For the Records, after a brief introduction from the filmmakers:

When Bob Plotnik quit law to open up a record store in Greenwich Village in the ’60s, the only thing he wanted was to get hold of his favorite street doo-wop records ahead of everyone else.

He couldn’t have known that the store Read more of this post

Azealia Banks Wows at the Met Ball + 212 ft. Lazy Jay FREE MP3 Download + FULL STREAM

First and foremost, we have to apologize for not being more on top of this and getting it out to you. Since last Fall when this track dropped, we really dug it but given recent developments, this song could be a forewarning of things to come. Apparently The Metropolitan Museum of Art here in NYC held a ball where Nicki Minaj was scheduled to perform. The word on the street (actually Wendy Williams) is that Nicki did not execute her contract in time and Ms. Banks replaced her.

Fashion magnate Karl Lagerfeld reportedly looooved her performance and will be looking to work with her in some capacity in the future. Sooo, all we are saying is that Nicki better look in her rear view mirror because there is a young sista gaining on her. Her recent LP has received mixed reviews and she could use some good news.

And for the record, while this tune is a bit explicit in parts (a lot of parts), we LOVE it. It reminds us of an over the top West London party track with super entertaining lyrics and vocal performance. Well well done. If you are not up on this, you GOTS TA BE NOW!
