Before we say anything else, we have to say that albums and sounds like this are why we do what we do. This album by abstract soul group, Hiatus Kaiyote, bubbled up to us from soulhead Akiima Price from Washington, D.C., who put us on to this incredible group from the Land Down Under, Melbourne, Australia, to be specific. Although nearly a year old, it is clearly new to us and, we imagine, many of you. Read more of this post

We have much love for Raheem DeVaughn not just because soulhead founder Ron Worthy is from the DMV, but because this brother has consistently put out quality soulful R&B and stayed true to his roots. His voice and delivery continue to improve as he hones his craft as a performer and song writer. This track, which was recently released, is an ode to Read more of this post

This is an extremely soulful, albeit mellow, way to cruise through your morning cup of coffee while also paying homage to hip-hop and the Autumn (our favorite time of year). Powered by an extensive (and deep) collage of classic and rare soul samples and Golden Era boom-bap beats, Memphis producer Fathom 9‘s mostly instrumental hip-hop album will have your neck hurting from all the serious nodding you will be doing. We cannot express how hyped we are that this incredible group is back in town and making the usual stir. Big up to Forrest Renaissance for the look out on this one. On their New Designer Drug tour, J*DaVey is on the rise and we are hopeful that their latest work will propel them to the heights they deserve. We first heard of J*DaVeY several years back with their underground smash “Slooww,” which just felt right. Then we fell hard when we heard them on 4Hero’s “Take My Time,” which is one of the most incredible songs of the past 10 years in our book. This duo has been making only the best noise and we anticipate a packed house for this one.
soulheads Rejoice! If there was ever a group you NEED to pay attention to, this is the one. Be there!

More about J*DaVeY:
When merging hip-hop culture, electronic innovation, a soul/funk spirit and a punk attitude – you can often reference the magic that is J*DaVeY, a multi-talented duo out of Los Angeles, CA. Composed of vocalist/emcee Jack Davey and producer/writer Brook D’Leau, J*DaVeY has gradually captured the attention of an international cult following over the past ten years. Their progressive style and organic chemistry being comparable to that of Missy Elliot and Timbaland; J*DaVeY is known to give you a “drug-induced” soundscape that takes you far beyond the confines of any particular genre. With enough features and world tours under their belt to be considered a pop sensation, J*DaVeY has reached their tipping point in the music industry. The group’s highlights include touring with Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae (2010) and internationally with Sa-Ra Creative Partners (2004), special performances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (2008) as well as Mens Fashion Week in Paris for the Head Designer of La Coste (2007) and performing as Direct Support for The Roots, Erykah and Jay-Z live at Radio City Music Hall (2006) and Prince (2006) at his Las Vegas club 3121 after he invited them personally to perform with him. Over the years, J*DaVeY has liscenced music to CSI:NY, Bossin’ Up (Snoop Dogg), Nike’s Latin America Campaign, Alize and worked closely with top songwriters such as Kara Dioguardi & Cathy Dennis (American Idol Judge) and top producers Greg Wells (Katy Perry, Mika, Timbaland), Gregg Kurstin (Pink, Lilly Allen, The Bird And The B), and Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio). J*DaVeY has also been featured on distinguished projects such as The Roots’ “Game Theory,” 4hero’s “Play With The Changes,” 88 Keys’ “Death Of Adam,” L.A.U.S.D.’s “Curly Tops & Nautica Jackets,” The Bloody Beetroots’ “Romborama,” Kardinal Offishall “Not 4 sale,” and various Sa-Ra releases.
Since then, J*DaVeY has released a few independent records that have gained reputable recognition. Their first being an independent double-disc “The Beauty in Distortion/The Land Of The Lost” through Interdependent Media/ILLAV8R in 2008 while signed to Warner Bros. Records/Sire. At the close of 2009, they released their first installment of “The Great Mistapes” titled “Boudoir Synema” and their second, titled, “Evil Christian Cop,” in February 2011.
After a recent separation from Warner Bros. Records, J*DaVeY has officially launched their self-built creative imprint ILLAV8R through http://theillav8r.com/ and will be releasing New Designer Drug along with the re-launch of jdaveybaby.com through this online platform.
J*DaVeY’s show-favorites “Mama’s Back (EndOfUrWorld),” “Whatchalookin@” and “Queen Of Wonderland” are said to be key ingredients to their major debut New Designer Drug which will hit iTunes early Summer 2011.
Here are a couple of our favorite J*DaVeY cuts if you are not up on them or their music:

J*DaVeY (with 4Hero) – Take MY Time
More about Siya:
In todays society, the urban music industry has become nothing more than flash visions of surgically enhanced women, designer jewels, cars and clothing paired with mind-numbing lyrics and basement beats as a backdrop. While the rap game has morphed into a mockery of what was once a platform of storytelling, a small few still hold true to hip-hops original creative structure lyrical flow and style. And, among the handful of emcees who respect the game as a form of art rather than a get rich quick scheme, theres a girl – who goes by first name only Siya.
