We are really looking forward to this show for so many reasons. We knew Maya was funny and had the genes to be a singer (daughter of soul/jazz legend Minnie Riperton) and we love her take on Beyonce among other singers. But who knew she was such a Prince head, like us? Well, we will certainly be in the house and know this will draw an interesting crowd, if nothing else. This should be fun. See you there.

Here she is as “Princess” doing a cover of Darling Nikki in Los Angeles a while back:

2012 BET Award Winners

Last night’s BET Awards 2012 was pretty awesome.  We really enjoyed all the performances especially Cissy Houston’s heartfelt tribute to Whitney Houston, who died earlier this year as well as Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, who performed for the first time ever on national television, despite making music for more than 40 years.  Another highlight was Jay-Z’s mock interruption of Kanye West, which brought the crowd to cheers remembering Kanye’s Taylor Swift-gate a couple years back.

Check out our predictions in bold below along with actual winners in green.   Clearly, we did not see things the way BET saw them since our hit ratio was dismal this year.  How did you do?

2012 BET Award Predictions and Commentary by Ron Worthy

Words by Ron Worthy

This year’s BET Awards, which airs on the network (check your local listings) this Sunday, July 1 at 8PM ET should be a great time. With Samuel L. Jackson hosting, D’Angelo returning to the scene, and Nicki Minaj, Frankie Beverly and Maze performing among others, this should be one of the best ever.

I had the privilege of attending the BET Awards in 2009, just days after the death of Michael Jackson.  It was one of the most fun nights I have ever had and met so many of my childhood idols like Grandmaster Flash, Too Short and several others.   The atmosphere, style and entertainment are second to none.  Good luck this year to everyone at BET who is working hard on this year’s production.

Check out our predictions in bold below:

Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee Concert Recap by Ron Worthy

By Ron Worthy
Some folks may not believe in the idea of a Queen or Royal Family and resent the presence of such lavish celebrations in light of the poverty that exists throughout the World.   They believe the resources meant for such over the top celebrations should be redistributed to those most in need.  In my opinion, the Royal Family exists as a global reminder of the splendor of pageantry.   While the Royal Family is not perfect, we feel it is certainly appropriate to celebrate the Queen’s 60th year on the throne.   Having been to London many many times, I know our friends across the Pond take their Royals very seriously.  While there, I visited Buckingham Palace as well as the Royal Crown Jewels.  It was simply amazing and I became a fan.  Yes, there is a ton of imperialism underscoring the crown, but on this day, let’s try to keep it light and celebrate the Queen and the British culture, which has produced some of the best music anywhere on the planet.

As a kid, I recall being in a thrift store and hearing The Style Council‘s Home and Abroad live album.   Paul Weller and crew changed my life with their interpretation of American soul, but done with a very grand pop presentation.  They spoke of the Queen often.  It was light an aural mirror; one I loved.  Then, of course, I became entranced by Morrissey voice on The Smith’s The Queen is Dead, the album I spent hours with during high school.  And, of course, Depeche Mode….ah Depeche Mode.  I listened to Catching Up With Depeche Mode nearly everyday after hearing them for the first time on a bus ride to Boston from the Philips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire where I was for Summer school.  Those beats and stories of life and “strange love” in London built my curiosity.   I also recall not understanding a word The Cure‘s Robert Smith sang on Why Can’t I Be You? but not being able to stop dancing.

When I finally arrived in London several years later and had my first pint, I felt like I was at home. The pubs, the architecture, the cloudy skies, the cobblestones, the cabs, the double deckers, wooooo!  LOVE it.  And of course, the record stores, clubs and ambient music was and is just perfect in our eyes.

Fast forward to today and the Brits continue to deliver the goods in terms of music.  From British soul legend Omar to Amy Winehouse and Adele, England has been producing quality for decades.  We are happy they have chosen to celebrate their Queen and we are happy to present some of the highlights from the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert, which features incredible performances by Elton John, Grace Jones, Stevie Wonder and many others.

Stevie Wonder – Isn’t She Lovely

Stevie Wonder (with Will.I.Am)- Happy Birthday

Stevie Wonder – Superstition

Grace Jones – Slave to the Rhythm

Elton John – Crocodile Rock

Elton John – I’m Still Standing

Lyricist Lounge 20th Year Reunion Party at Le Poisson Rouge RECAP + VIDEO RECAP

Event: Lyricist Lounge 20th Anniversary Celebration
Date: May 23, 2012
Venue: Le Poission Rouge
City: New York, New York
Host: Black Thought
Performances by:  Bush Babies, Doug E. Fresh, DJ Kid Capri among MANY others…..

Forward by Ron Worthy

Nearly twenty years ago, I met Danny Castro and Anthony Marshall during the New Music Seminar.  I was a delegate from the mighty KZSU 90.1 FM Stanford Radio and had been hearing about Lyricist Lounge through the grapevine.  So, it was indeed a pleasure to attend one of those earlier sessions during the seminar.  These brothers have been doing it big from the beginning and have provided an unmistakably important platform that has endured the test of time.  Dozens of artists owe their first big break to Lyricist Lounge and even artists past their prime have always found an audience hungry for authentic hip hop the way it was meant to be heard.  No disrespects to the new artists on the scene since we dig a few of them, but the Lounge was the place to really learn and grow in the craft and culture of Hip Hop, something that is sorely missing these days.

By Jay Fingers

On Wednesday, May 23, NYC hip-hop aficionados converged upon Greenwich Village music venue Le Poisson Rouge to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the Lyricist Lounge, a now-legendary open mic showcase that rose from humble beginnings to eventually become a cultural phenomenon, spawning a series of successful albums, concert tours, and an MTV sketch comedy series. The crowd was a varied mix of industry heads, b-boys and girls, hipsters, and music royalty.

Early in the evening, after an excellent set consisting of head-nod joints from DJs Rich Medina and Akalepse, founders Danny Castro and Anthony Marshall appeared on stage to give those in attendance a brief lesson on the history of Lyricist Lounge. An accompanying video showcased highlights from the past twenty years, including footage of then up-and-comers such as Eminem, Foxy Brown, Big Pun, M.O.P., Xzibit, Slum Village, and The Notorious B.I.G., just to name a few.

The evening’s host was Black Thought, lead MC of the legendary Philly hip-hop band The Roots. In black-and-white checkered fedora and fuchsia polo shirt, the man born Tariq Trotter wowed the crowd with truly impressive freestyle interludes interspersed between musical sets.

At one point, Thought was joined onstage by Brooklyn son Mos Def for a rousing performance of the classic joint “75 Bars,” a song that Thought jokingly admitted to not knowing as well as his guest. The two also paid tribute to The Beastie Boys’ Adam “MCA” Yauch, who passed away earlier this month after a three-year battle with throat cancer.

Omar
England’s Nu-Soul legend was the major influence for the America’s Neo Soul movement of the late 90’s. Notable artists such as D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and Jill Scott all claim Omar as a major influence. His distinct bass laden melodies make his groove unmistakably OMAR and undeniable.

OMAR is supported by:
teddycrockett – guitar
Eric Brown – drums
Raymond Angry – keys
Vivian Sessoms – backing vocals
BJ Moore – backing vocals
Mike Griot – basses/Musical Director

Taylor McFerrin
Taylor McFerrin has sustained an major buzz in the Future Soul scene ever since his 2007 EP “Broken Vibes” gained heavy rotation by DJ’s such as Benji B, Gilles Peterson and Garth Trinidad. His musical style is equally influenced by the legends of 60′s / 70′s soul and the kings of the Modern Beat Generation. Taylor’s first full length LP, titled “Early Riser” is due out on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Record Label, Fall 2012.

Omar Bio from AllMusic.com:

Designated by many as the father of British neo-soul (though his impact extends over to U.S. shores as well), singer/songwriter/producer Omar began as one of the U.K.’s most promising R&B hopefuls with his early-’90s international hit “There’s Nothing Like This.” However, unintentionally avoiding pop stardom, he chose never to compromise his artistic credibility; and because of that, people like India.Arie, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, Gilles Peterson, and his biggest idol, Stevie Wonder, have all endorsed him as personal fans (with the prior three naming him as an influence). Although he gets thrown into the R&B category, Omar has no real definitive boundaries. In interesting new ways with each album, he has molded soul and urban music to fit his wide variety of influences, including ragga, hip-hop, funk, jazz-pop, rock, and Latin/Caribbean dance. Despite the lack of chart success, his original techniques have garnered him a strong legion of followers in the U.K. and a devoted fan base in diverse regions across the world.

Born October 14, 1968, in London but raised in Canterbury, Omar Lye-Fook couldn’t escape the call to music even he tried. His father, Byron Lye-Fook, was a studio musician and drummer who had done work for reggae greats Bob Marley and Horace Andy as well as the Rolling Stones. At age five, Omar was already learning how to play the drums. During his grade school years, he completed formal training in piano, trumpet/coronet, and other percussion instruments, but he also taught himself to play the bass, emulating Level 42 guitarist Mark King. As a part of various brass, jazz, and percussion ensembles, the young prodigy had performed in Italy, Brazil, and the U.S. before turning 15 years old. By the time he was a student at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music in London, he was too tempted in pursuing a professional career and left after one year. Recording for his father’s Kongo label, Omar debuted in 1985 with the single “Mr. Postman” at age 16. With Kongo following up with a series of buzz-worthy white labels throughout the late ’80s, Omar’s favorable reception continued to grow because of his classic yet updated soul approach, which was years before neo-soul became an acknowledged subgenre.

“There’s Nothing Like This” first broke out in 1990. It peaked in the U.K.’s Top 20 the following year and remained on top of the R&B and dance charts for several weeks. This was at a time when acid jazz and house were the dominant urban forms in Britain. The soulful ballad got Omar signed to pioneering disc jockey Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud imprint. He recorded the albums There’s Nothing Like This (1990), which was compiled from his earlier Kongo recordings, and Music (1992), a more mature outing, both in terms as a musician and a singer. (On some of these earlier recordings, he is credited as Omar Hammer, deriving from his stepfather’s last name.) For his following two albums, For Pleasure (1994) and This Is Not a Love Song (1997), he moved on to major label RCA. The former had him in the studio with ex-Motown songwriters and producers Leon Ware and Lamont Dozier, who were both fans of his music. But on the latter album, RCA keyboardist/producer David Frank (Chaka Khan, Phil Collins, Christina Aguilera) took the reins of the album’s direction. Full Bio.

Taylor McFerrin Biography from Wikipedia.com:

Taylor McFerrin is an American DJ, Producer, Keyboardist, Beatboxer, and Vocalist signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. Son of popular musician Bobby McFerrin, Taylor falls into a very unique and cutting edge genre of Hip Hop known as Future Soul characterized by electronic ambient textures, highly processed and often progressive drum samples/beats including elements of dubstep and post-dubstep, 60′s soul and jazz, and a structure heavily based on improvisation, all gelled together with a strong Hip-Hop feel. Since the 2006 release of his debut EP, Broken Vibes, McFerrin has been gaining quite a following/buzz and has exceeded audience’s expectations all over New York City and Internationally with his genre-defying solo-act, seamlessly building beats from scratch with a heavy reliance on part looping. McFerrin currently resides in Brooklyn, NY continuing to tour and work on his highly anticipated up and coming debut solo album Early Riser. Full Bio.
