Anderson .Paak – Malibu [FULL ALBUM STREAM + REVIEW]

This past weekend, a close friend and fellow soulhead, leaned over to me and asked me to listen to something she knew I would enjoy.  Almost immediately, my face scrunched up and my neck began to bob uncontrollably.  She smiled in agreement and gave me the details that this was Anderson Paak, who had been featured on Dr. Dre‘s latest LP, Compton.  “Ahhhh” I replied and instantly recognized his voice and vibe.  Fast forward to the next day when I would have a chance to listen to the long player, Malibu, in full.

Plain and simple, artists like this and music like this is why we do this.  Combining soul, hip-hop, jazz and a little something extra, this brother has “IT”.  Since jumping on the scene a few years ago as Breezy Lovejoy, this artist has been making waves for sure.  He has the flow and musicality that has been sorely lacking on the scene.  His sound is reminiscent of Bilal, Kendrick Lamar and strangely, Jamiroquai.  That said, he is also clearly in his own lane, shapeshifting like the recently departed legend, David Bowie.

Honestly, this record is immediately going to be on our year end’s best list.  Complete with standout verses, beats, music and guests like Schoolboy Q, Rapsody, Talib Kweli and our newest fave, BJ The Chicago Kid, this joint bangs from start to finish. We haven’t been this excited about a release since last year’s Ego Death by The Internet.  Take our advice and buckle up and tune in to this one.  It will make your morning (and year) much better.
