Q&A: Estelle + ‘Game Of Thrones’ = ‘Catch the Throne: The Mixtape’ [FULL STREAM] @EstelleDarlings @erickablount

estelle-4f8a9b5b4724cEstelle has been getting all over the place lately–touring, making a guest appearance and recording a song on network television’s hottest show, “Empire,” releasing a new album, True Romance, and being the voice of Garnet on the cult classic animated series “Steven Universe.”

But zealous fans of HBO’s fantasy series “Game of Thrones” will be most excited about her appearance on the second mixtape for the show, which also includes songs by Method Man, Snoop Dogg, Anthrax, Melanie Fiona, Ty Dolla $ign, Talib Kweli and Stalley.

Catch the Throne: The Mixtape is the second volume that HBO & Launch Point Records are releasing leading up to the season 5 debut of the show.

Produced by Launch Point Records, the 15-song mixtape features diverse artists representing “Game of Thrones” families, leveraging themes and highlights from season 4. Showcasing the importance of music in “Game of Thrones,” each song on the mixtape samples music from the show’s season 4 soundtrack. This year’s mixtape also weaves in the overarching theme of fire and ice, providing listeners with a line-up of heavy metal and hip-hop artists.

As huge fans of the series, artists were eager to participate. “Off the top, I love ‘Game of Thrones’ – I even gave my expert analysis of this season on my GGN show. It’s like the rap game, it’s gangster, about family, loyalty and trying to get to the top,” stated Snoop Dogg. “I had to get involved. Give the fans a little bit of how I see it.”

Estelle had the chance to talk to soulhead about her participation on Catch the Throne: The Mixtape and all of her new ventures:

soulhead:  Are you a fan of “Game of Thrones?” How did you get on the mixtape?
Estelle:  I started in and out watching “Game of Thrones,” cause I’m not really a blood and guts girl. What I like about it is that it surprises you at every turn. It is almost like the “Dynasty” of that world. That’s the only reason I like it. Other than that they kill each other far too much. Everyone is always getting stabbed or dismembered. I’m caught up to the last season now.

soulhead: How did you get on the mixtape? Were all of the musicians in the studio together?
Estelle:  No, they were all recorded separately—I was there on my own. I went on a whole different day based on the fact that I was on the road at the time. It was pretty easy. I hadn’t done it before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was a song about one of the “Game of Thrones” characters. I was in the house of Tyrion. The character was a bit cut throat and a bit ruthless. Probably because she had to look out for herself a lot of the time.

soulhead:  How did it relate to the fire and ice theme?
Estelle:  She is more of the ice queen in that situation. She can be very evil, but you see every once in awhile where her humanity kicks in.

soulhead:  What are you doing otherwise?
Estelle:  I just released an album, single “Conquest” is doing well. You’ve seen me on “Empire.” Now we’re doing shows, lining up tours, doing more tv work and I’m a voice character on a cartoon called “Steven Universe” on the Cartoon network. It’s for both tweens and young adults, it comes on right before “Adventure” and replays in the middle of the night for grown adults.

soulhead:  What about touring?
Estelle:  Right now we’re doing a lot of festival dates. We just finished up a tour in Dec.

soulhead:  What’s your draw to tv?
Estelle:  It’s fun, this is my fourth album, so I can do music backwards, with my eyes closed. I like staying excited to do something new and creative without having people say to me, “oh you know I didn’t understand what that was but maybe in 3 years we can do it.” Trying to stay creative under those constraints is a little frustrating at times, so I tend to take my time with music, I don’t feel the need to rush it out. But creators, we get bored and want to get into other things. I figure I may as well, I am being offered, some of them I take seriously. I have a lot of actor friends, so I take the same approach as if they want to do music. They say I want to sing, I say sing then and lets do it properly. I want to use the same approach towards acting. I never want to be disrespectful in that aspect. I want to be here for awhile.
