Like most, we are very skeptical about reality talent shows and the actual “talent” they produce. Sure, the first few seasons of American Idol produced several hits and artists who have the potential to be around for quite a while. However, since then, there have been a slew of copy cat shows and other music reality formats introduced. One show, the X factor, seemed to be an exact copy of AI, but with less vocal talent. That is, until now.
Enter Marcus Canty, who made a splash on the aforementioned show and has been working his a** off since making his 15 seconds into 15 minutes. After hearing this EP, we believe he is well on his way. It has a classic feel and is full of variety and solid production that complements Canty’s significant vocal talents very well.
The only knock with this album is that the songs and production sound tailor made for the radio but sound like too many other artists for this release to really distinguish Canty. He deserves to take a rest after this worldwind touring and really take time to define his own sound. Until then, folks may not be able to distinguish him from Chris Brown or Trey Songz even though he arguably has a better voice. Just saying.
More from Billboard:
The anticipation behind Marcus Canty’s debut album, “This… Is Marcus Canty,” has been brewing since appearing on the first season of reality TV singing competition, “The X Factor.”
The singer captivated fans and judges, including his mentor, Epic Records’ L.A. Reid, with his soulful crooning. Since signing with Epic on January 2012, Marcus Canty has been crafting his 7-song EP, which includes his single, “In & Out,” featuring Wale, and has been on a 40-city promo tour.
Marcus Canty not only plans to “keep R&B timeless” with “This… Is Marcus Canty” but also satisfy the ladies specifically. “At the end of the day, you have to make a woman feel special. So my music is geared towards the ladies obviously,” he said.
